How Much does a Piece of Dust Weigh?
Los Angeles, 2023
When I was little, I looked at my mom's shadows and other things, such as hair, fiber, and dust, on the bed every sleepless night. Suddenly, these little things seemed to come alive that were breathing and expanding. From then on, I have been afraid of giant objects like planets…
My lens-based work, How much does a piece of dust weigh?, is inspired by the Chinese folk tale of San Shi Shu (the Book of Three Lifetimes) and lyrics from Cantonese pop music. San Shi Shu shows each individual's destiny, important relatives, and true love. However, those who were significant but stepped into our lives but briefly, will not be recorded. Man on the Moon by Hong Kong pop singer Eason Chan sings: "Watching from the moon, it is difficult to distinguish between real love and wrong love on the Earth. San Shi Shu will not record all my favorites throughout my life." Compared to our life span, our feelings and emotions are temporary and tiny as dust, even though they once were heavy and deep. I am overwhelmed to see those delicate and fragile feelings that were important fading out of my life; therefore, I catch them through my lens by capturing the tiny size of people in relationship to the blurry colossal object in the front and the broad environment in the background.
